The DCS-IVH-48 is an early 48-inch island vent hood from the DCS days, with a 36-inch sibling, the DCS-IVH-36. An island hood hangs over a cooktop in the middle of the kitchen, so it has no wall to lean on and its mounting counts for more than on a wall hood.
That explains a call we hear on island hoods: a hood that sways. We check the ceiling mount and the support hardware before anything else. When the blower does not start, we test the switch panel, the wiring and the blower motor in that order. My island hood sways. Is it unsafe?
A swaying hood means the mounts or support hardware have loosened. We inspect the ceiling connection and tighten or replace what is worn. Stop using the lights and blower if it feels loose.
The blower will not start. What do you check?
The switch panel and its wiring first, then the blower motor. Corrosion on the switches is common on older island hoods, because steam and grease reach them.
Do you fix the duct above the ceiling?
No. Duct work above the ceiling is a contractor's job. We repair the hood itself, which means the blower, the switches, the lights and the mounting hardware.
