Short answer: most older DCS grills are worth repairing when the cast burners and the body are sound and the problem is a wear part such as an igniter, a valve, a hose or a regulator. A grill is usually not worth repairing when the firebox has rusted through or the frame is failing. We look at the whole grill before we say which one you have.
What Usually Decides It
- The firebox and frame. Surface rust can be cleaned. Holes, flaking metal and a sagging cart are a different story.
- The burners. Burners that are intact but dirty are fine. Burners that are cracked or eaten away by rust are a bigger job.
- Parts for your age of grill. Some parts for older grills are scarce, and we tell you before we order anything.
- How the grill is used. A grill that sits uncovered through Houston humidity ages faster than one under a cover or roof.
What We Check During the Visit
We light each burner, look at the flame, test the ignition, inspect the hose and regulator connections, and look at the firebox from below. A sign like a weak flame can come from a clogged port or from a gas supply problem, so one sign alone does not tell us the answer.
A Boundary We Hold on Gas
If you smell gas, turn off the supply at the tank or shutoff if you can do it safely, step away, and phone your gas utility once you are outdoors. The gas line itself, and any new gas connection, are a licensed plumber’s work. We repair the grill, not the house piping.
