The SBE1-142-N is a 14-inch Series 9 built-in double side burner for natural gas, rated at 17,000 BTU for each burner. It shares ignition and dial lighting with the Series 9 modules beside it, and the LP version is sold as the SBE1-142-L.
Side burners live outdoors and take the spills. Boil-over residue can short the ignitor so the burner clicks without lighting, and a lid hinge can stiffen in humid air or when salt is in the air near the coast. We check the ignitor first, then the burner ports and the simmer behavior at the low setting, since one burner that simmers unevenly can indicate a partly blocked port.
Because the ignition is shared with neighboring modules, we also look at whether the problem is only at this unit. We read the model and serial from the label before ordering parts. If the gas line to the module needs work, a licensed plumber does that, and we do the burner.

Why does my side burner click but not light?
Boil-over residue on the ignitor or electrode is a common cause. We clean the area, test the spark and check that the burner ports are open before replacing anything.
One burner simmers unevenly. What is wrong?
Blocked ports or a burner that is not seated correctly are the first things we check. We compare the flame between the two burners and adjust, clean or replace the part.
The lid hinge is stiff. Is that something you fix?
Yes. Humid air can corrode a lid hinge. We free or replace it, and we also check the lid seal area so spills do not run into the burner.
