When one side of a DCS grill cooks faster than the other, the cause is usually something you can see: clogged burner ports, a misplaced part, or a regulator that cannot keep up. Here are five causes, from most to least common on grills in the 10 to 20 year range.
Five Causes of Uneven Heat
- Clogged burner ports. Grease and food residue close off some of the small openings, so the flame is strong in one spot and weak in another.
- Misaligned burner or cap. A burner that is not seated squarely changes how gas and air mix.
- Blocked air shutter. Spiders and debris in the tube leading to the burner can starve it of air.
- Worn or shifted heat plates. Warped or missing plates over the burners change how heat spreads.
- Low gas pressure. A regulator that is aging, or a nearly empty propane tank, weakens every burner, usually the far ones first.
What You Can Safely Do
With the grill cool and the gas off, lift the grates and heat plates, clean the ports with a soft brush, and set the burners back evenly. Do not enlarge ports with a drill or a nail. That changes the flame and makes the problem worse.
What the Sign Cannot Tell You
A hot spot does not say whether the burner, the regulator or the heat plates are to blame. If cleaning does not even out the flame, we test it burner by burner. Anything that involves the gas line or a new connection goes to a licensed plumber, and we will say so when we see it.
