DCS RF15I Ice Maker Repair

Most common issues on this model

  1. Drain pump operation and discharge line
  2. Cutter grid dividing the ice slab
  3. Water inlet valve and reservoir seals
  4. Condenser airflow around the cabinet

The RF15I was the first outdoor ice maker DCS built, a 15-inch undercounter unit that drains by gravity or by a drain pump. This unit is from the early generation, and we service it for Houston owners who have kept one running beside an outdoor kitchen for a long time.

Three systems decide whether it makes ice: refrigeration, water and drain. A pump that has stopped moving water leaves the bin wet and the unit shutting down. A cutter grid that no longer divides the slab sends oversized chunks into the bin. Water seen under the cabinet usually traces to the reservoir, a hose or a fitting, so we dry the area and find where it starts.

Because the unit sits outdoors, dirt and heat also matter, and we look at the condenser. Parts for the first-generation unit can take time to locate, so we look into supply and advise you honestly if replacement makes more sense. Nothing is ordered until the label has given us the model and serial.

RF15IRF15I questions
Why is there water under my outdoor ice maker?

On this unit the usual suspects are the reservoir, a hose connection or the drain pump line. We dry the area, run a cycle and watch where the water first appears before replacing parts.

My ice comes out as one big slab. Why?

The cutter grid divides the frozen sheet into cubes. If it is not heating or cutting as it should, the slab drops whole. We test the grid and the cycle that drives it.

Is a drain pump required for this model?

No. The RF15I can drain by gravity or use a pump, depending on how it is installed. If the drain line does not slope away from the unit, a pump is the usual fix.
